New King James - language is really powerful. And if I don't know what something means, I have to look it up - I get a better mental workout that way.

I started using the NIV on a regular basis in the last year. Before I was a staunch NASB person. I still like a lot of verses better, (especially Psalms and Proverbs) in the NASB, but the NIV is good for ease of reading. I also like the New Living Translation. I believe it is very helpful to read different translations.

I'm a little late on this one, but I go back and forth between NAS and NIV. Literal word-for-word vs. translation of meaning. Good for me to mix it up.

Word up on that. It is good to switch it up in order to increase understanding by sampling different versions of what the original author was really trying to say. I used to work at the Greek New Testament, but that was pretty time consuming. Much easier to read one of the English versions, although I hear good things about the Spanish version of the Bible. Also, sometimes the Good News Bible is interesting b/c it has the Apocrypha, a wild and crazy read for sure!
